A new way to connect
ECRS Winter Adventure is a creative and joyous alternative holiday experience. There’s nothing tedious or tiresome here. Young and old will be thoroughly engaged in four days filled with a diverse array of classes (improv to introspection, crafts to collaborating games, and much more!).

Unscheduled time
There are breaks and free time for relaxing or leading your own recreational activities (or exploring in the woods or going into town).

It’s about community
Each evening, we gather together as a group to enjoy a mix of activities for all ages: games. dancing, music-making, informal dramatics, sing-alongs, and good conversation. After an evening snack, there are a variety of “late night activities.” Not a fan of typical New Year’s Eve parties? Celebrate the uniquely ECRS way, with enough warmth, light, and fun to last through next year

Eating is a time to connect, too
Meals are buffet-style, with everyone eating together in groups at large round tables. Connect with one special friend, or with a different one of your ECRS “family” at each one! Vegetarian and gluten-free options are available.

Full Covid policy (click to expand for the most up-to-date details)

Winter Adventure 2022 COVID Policy

The Winter Adventure COVID policy was developed by the Board after consulting with various health
care providers, reviewing CDC recommendations as well as examining COVID policies from other indoor
group events and conferences. Please note that the following requirements are subject to change in
accordance with updated CDC guidelines and national COVID case counts.

1/ Vaccination against Covid-19 is required to attend Winter Adventure. The requirements are as
follows:
–       Proof of vaccination: *As per CDC, vaccination can range from a single dose (Johnson & Johnson) to a
2-dose series (Moderna, Pfizer) with consideration of a person’s age and immune status.
–       One booster dose: *As per CDC, a subsequent dose of vaccine administered to enhance or restore
protection which might have waned over time after primary series vaccination**.

2/ A Negative Rapid Home Test result must be presented upon arrival. It is recommended that
participants test PRIOR to traveling so as not to have to return home should one be asymptomatic with a
positive test result (see #4 below). In addition, participants are required to bring at least one unopened
test with them to retest should symptoms occur during the week.

3/ All participants will be required to fill in a COVID symptoms checklist completed the day of
travelling to WA to rule out any COVID risk factors. Again, it is strongly recommended that this be done
before leaving home so as not to have to return home if any of the risk factors are identified.

4/ Participants with symptoms or are asymptomatic with a positive test result are asked to stay
home and their registration costs will be refunded to them.

5/ Any participant who develops symptoms while at Winter Adventure will be required to either return
home or to quarantine at the event. Living space will be designated at Watson Homestead for
quarantining. If returning home, registration costs will be refunded.

6/ Masking is optional.

7/ Flu shots are strongly recommended but not required.

**While both vaccination(s) and a booster are required as per this policy, if you have a circumstance
that prevents you from any of the above requirements, email board@ecrs.org to request an exemption.

 Morning first period classes

All 4 days: International Dances (Patricia Williams)

International Dance gives us an experience of other cultures even as we connect with each other. Come learn a variety of dances from around the world, each chosen to move your body, mind, and spirit. Great music, great exercise, great fun—and no need to do them “right”!

Class requirements/materials
Ages 9 and up or with special permission

All 4 Days: POSTERS WITH LUNGS: Making our Voices Visible about Contemporary Challenges (Teri Wilkinson)

Posters have long been an effective way of SPEAKING OUT LOUD about WHAT’S UP in the societal spaces we share, as well as changes needed to create a sustainable, just, equitable humane existence for all life on our planetary home. Let’s use our brilliance & creativity rooted in cooperative playful community to design visual message boards that speak strongly to what we want to change, by offering solutions to the challenges we are facing. We will begin this process by voicing & writing down the issues followed by envisioning how solutions would appear; then in the context of the class, what images, words & art would make clear, strong poster presentations.
We will be working with paper cutting, tearing, layering (as with tissue paper), collaging (using magazines, calendars, etc), paints, markers. Please bring scissors (both fine & large), rulers, magazines, news papers, etc.

All 4 Days: Singing For Every Body and Soul (Roberta Kirn)

Roberta Kirn is a singer, percussionist, and dancer who loves to share easy-to-learn songs and chants from around the world as well as experimenting with improvisational Circlesongs and body percussion. Her most important teachers have been Ysaye Barnwell and Bobby McFerrin. The class will include learning songs that she has collected during her travels with The Song Exchange Project, exploring body percussion and rhythm games and experimenting with vocal improvisation. Depending on the interests of the group the classes might culminate in a Community Sing and informal performance, sharing songs learned during our time together.

Morning second period classes

All 4 Days: The Write Stuff (Beverly Pincus)

If you can write you can WRITE!! Through fun original writing exercises we will stimulate creativity and break through writing blocks. Want to learn what part of your brain houses your imagination, or visit a word museum? After some playful warmups you will be given a series of prompts to write what you know best —the stories of your lives. In a safe, supportive, and confidential environment you will share these stories with the group. There will also be an optional opportunity to read your work to the larger ECRS community in a special evening showcase. This class is designed for people who have always wanted to write and never thought
they could, experienced writers with a regular writing practice, and everyone in between. Please commit to all four days, Come and discover your authentic voice and the written expression of your deep heart.

Course materials/requirements

Please bring a journal or notebook to write in and something to write with. Participants are strongly encouraged to use paper and pen, though writing on a computer is also allowed. Please come with a curious mind and an open heart.

Age 15+
Class limited to 12 people

Days 1-2 and Days 3-4: Songful Games (Julie Lipson)

Come play songful games! Fast-paced and silly with elements of improv and teamwork — these games will make you laugh (and sing)!

Days 1-2: Playing Music for Dance (Mark Schwartz)

The course will focus on playing a variety of tunes for square, contra, and international folk dancing as well as waltzes, polkas and possibly some other tunes. Emphasis will be on having fun, not perfection! Will discuss phrasing and rhythms that help “drive” the dancers and build energy during the dances.

Music will be provided, for all different levels. Course attendees should bring instruments, and can include percussion for those that do not read music. Some of the music will be played live at the Evening Parties.

Days 1-2: Informal Dramatics (Lane Neubauer)

Have you ever wanted to experience being someone other than yourself or perhaps an animal or inanimate object? Participants will be encouraged to use their imagination to bring whatever they choose to life. What does a table think when a flower is put on its top? How does a lion react when a rabbit tries to become its friend? How would the story go if your favorite fairy tale or fable had a different outcome? This class will consist of a variety of dramatic warm ups, exercises and games and will culminate each day with the creation of small group skits to be performed for the rest of the group.

Days 3-4: Transition with Intention (Reed Dewey)

This mini addresses any kind of life transition and how to successfully move from where you are to where you want to go. Transitions present their own challenges – but also create new opportunities. Get clearer about what a specific transition in your life means and how you’ll move forward. Leave with new ideas, insights and take away an action plan for your transition. Engage with others in a supportive setting. A number of resources and planning tools will be provided.

Days 3-4:Improv (Isaac Lebwohl-Steiner)

Are you ready? No? Perfect! Come make it up as you go and fake it until you realize you’ve already made it! We’ll learn a little, play a lot, and laugh too much. No experience with improvisational theater needed; newcomers and experienced improvisers are equally welcome.

Afternoon classes

All 4 days: Small Scenes (Isaac Lebwohl-Steiner)

If you have seen a play or a movie and imagined yourself as one of the characters, if you miss your time in the school play, or if you just want to be someone else for a minute, here is your chance! Comedy, drama, we have it all. Using scripts we will rehearse, perform, and discuss a collection of scenes. Explore, discover, and create!

Days 1-2: Israeli dance (Sharon Underberg)

A 2 day dive into Israeli dance, exploring the diversity and origins of Israeli dance. We’ll learn dances from the various cultural traditions that have influenced Israeli dance. Dances will range from the classics of the 40’s and 50’s to modern day and will vary in pace and complexity. For dancers of all levels.

Days 1-2: Table Games (Jack Marquess)

Table games will be introduced in various ways conducive to different learning styles. Several games will be introduced each day and you will have the option to learn and play the games of your choice. Once introduced in class, the games will be available in free time and late-night evening program. Some games will be new to ECRS, others not played in years, and a current favorite or two.

Days 1-2: Singing Together is Fun! (Barb Siftar)

Yes it is! And silly, and beautiful, and good for your health and soul. It’s also one of the six pillars of ECRS activities. This two-day singing mini will include lots of types of songs that are good for singing together. Class may include singing and clapping games, lots of rounds, harmonies, improvisations, soundscapes and vocal warm-ups. We will learn by listening, call and response and also word sheets and music. Ability to read music or prior experience not required. Open to all ages.

Days 3-4: Games (Lane Neubauer)

Lots of Games!! Some new, some old, some active, some quiet, lots of laughter, ALL FUN! This class will consist of games for all ages and abilities. Leadership strategies will be included so participants will be able to bring the ECRS fun into groups they are part of outside of Winter Adventure.

Days 3-4: Joy of Movement (Judi Powers and Marko Schmale)

Explore and unleash your potential through joyful movement. Engage your senses and listen to your body with a smorgasbord of dance and moving with purpose. We will do familiar dances and some not so familiar, all at your comfort level. Warning: this might change your life by positively shaping the way you think and feel.

Ages 11+.

Days 3-4: Printing Adinkra Symbols (Julie Siftar)

In 2021 I had the honor of visiting Ghana with the Witness Tree Institute of Ghana. https://www.witnesstreeinstitute.org/ Each summer their professional development trips for teachers create a time and space for deep learning through hands on experiences, reflection and relationships in Ghana.
In the birthplace of Adinkra, the Ashanti Region, I was introduced to this deeply meaningful and poetic cultural artform. Adinkra symbols express nuanced concepts, characteristics and local proverbs. The symbols are printed on fabric, carved into architecture and cast in brass and gold.
In this 2 day mini, we will create simplified Adinkra stamps for printing on paper, as we reflect on the deeper meaning the symbols may have for us.

Children’s Program (if at least three children ages 5-11 are registered by December 4)

Why should the grown ups have all the fun? ECRS offers a completely integrated program for children ages 5-11 during two class periods. Many activities mirror the cooperative play that ECRS is built on. Children may learn new games, create new crafts, sing silly songs, or even get the chance to share activities they have fun doing at home. Depending on age and interest, they may take a field trip to experience the more kid-friendly adult classes! Children’s Program during the remaining class period will be cooperative-led.

Note: Children are expected to stay for the entire program, and are the responsibility of their guardians at all other times. To help finalize staffing, this program will be offered only if at least three children ages 5-11 are registered by December 4
