Summer 2021 June Zoom

June 11, 2021 @ 6:00 pm - June 13, 2021 @ 6:00 pm

Summer 2021 - June on Zoom

Connect, create, and play with not-your-average classes – and a bit of ECRS magic – on Zoom

Start: Friday June 11, 2021 6:00 pm (EDT)
End: Sunday June 13, 2021 5:00pm (EDT)

Classes spread over the whole weekend = many opportunities to connect

Each day will include a range of classes to choose from. Pick just one, or several – whatever suits your fancy. Most are an hour and a half,  with two deep dives (I’m looking at you, Small Scenes and The Write Stuff!) that are three hours and both Saturday and Sunday sessions required.

Group activities for building community

In addition to classes, we will have a group kick off Friday evening and a closing event Sunday evening. Come see how being together with dozens of smiling faces on Zoom can feel uplifting and even intimate.

Registration for the Summer 2021 June Zoom Weekend is closed. Hope to see you there!

Event Kickoff

Friday 6:00 – 6:30 pm (EDT)
We’ll have a quick go-round to welcome everyone and get you in the mood for fun!

Party Games - Trevor the Games man

Friday 6:30 – 8:00 pm (EDT)
Ice breakers, brain games, word play, partner games, breakout room games — we’ll do them all in this fast-paced class!

People with any (or no!) Zoom expertise will enjoy this class. Trevor will explain how to use any functions you will use when you need them.

You don’t need to have your own device. In fact, it’s more FUN if you’re in the same room on the same device!

Songs for today (and tomorrow? or yesterday?) - Jacquie Adain

Friday 8:30 – 10:00 pm EDT
Sing and laugh with your fellow ECRS songsters! Well, sort of. Zoom means everyone except the person leading the song each time can ‘join in’ but must be muted. It will be a little bit weird but a lot wonderful! When it’s your turn, either lead a song or make a request.

Class requirements

  • Perhaps Rise Up Singing and Rise Again or access to the internet to search lyrics if desired (though not absolutely necessary)
  • You don’t have to be a Zoom expert, but should be familiar with basic Zoom features like chat, mute/unmute, and renaming yourself.
  • It’s not important at all for each participant to be on their own screen. In fact, it’s more enjoyable if participants shared a screen with others in their family!

Math through Puzzles, Games, Magic & Fun - Dan Rubin

Saturday 10:00 – 11:30 am DST
Solve puzzles, play games, perform magic, and have fun – with a mathematical theme. Topics and Activities may include: Facebook Viral Puzzles, Algebra Magic, Finger Math, Game of Sets, One Dollar Words, Mathematical Boggle, The Factor Game, Stories With A Hole, Poker Bingo.

Requirements
You should have a calculator and writing implements available.

There is no limit for age level but younger children should have an adult present to guide them. Activities will use different modalities.

Chair Yoga - Susan Rowan

Saturday 10:00 – 11:30 am (EDT)
Chair yoga offers endless variations that accommodate everyone — no matter your experience with yoga, current level of fitness, or age. The chair becomes our mat while we work through seated poses, and our support as we transition to standing and balance poses.

Taking time to quiet the mind in meditation and move the body with the breath, we begin to listen to our own inner wisdom voice, allowing each student the opportunity to make the practice his/her own. We will work safely and cautiously to build the strength and flexibility we need to face life’s everyday chores and challenges.

Requirements

During the class, each person (even if sharing a screen) should have their own

  • Tennis ball
  • Yoga mat (for stability)
  • Piece of wall you can lean against

All participants will enjoy this class, regardless of Zoom knowledge and number of people sharing a screen!

Show and Tell - Brian Rudnick

Saturday, noon – 1:30 pm (EDT)
You may remember show and tell from school days – how fun it was share a special object with your classmates and be surprised at what they brought.

Come join us in recreating the experience on Zoom! Bring two “things” to show and tell – one for a small group breakout room and the other, perhaps, for the main room, time permitting.

“Things” can include a particular talent. Or treasured object. Or…

Creative Exploration - Fun and Connection Facilitator Alyse Parise

Saturday, noon – 1:30 pm (EDT)
Enliven your creative self through moving, breathing, drawing and sharing in this multi-sensory, fun experience. You certainly don’t have to know how to draw! All you need to do is hold a colored marker and make marks on your page.

Deepen the connections between everyone in the class with opportunities for lively sharing.

Class requirements

  • It is important that everyone is on their own device (screen). Computers are better than phones so you can see everyone.
  • You will enjoy the class if you are fairly familiar with Zoom controls (i.e. renaming screen, chat, mute/unmute, change between gallery and speaker view, raise/lower hand, use whiteboard)
  • White art paper, best size 22 x15 inches or white cardboard that you can buy at a craft store such as Michaels or Blicks
  • At least 4 color markers of your choosing (preferably not black). If you have more color markers on hand that would be great.
  •

Building Resilience with Mindfulness - Heather Klemanski

Saturday 2:00 – 3:30 pm (EDT)
Bounce back from uncertainty and build resilience through the power of mindfulness. There couldn’t be a class more appropriate for the times!

You will leave armed with skills that will help create resilience in your everyday life. Come learn how to use mindfulness as a key driver of building resilience.

Class requirements

  • Notebook/journal, pen
  • Place to meditate and do some writing activities
  • More than one participants can share a device
  • You don’t have to be a Zoom expert to enjoy this class! It will be useful to be comfortable with basic Zoom features like chat, mute/unmute, switching between gallery and speaker view, raising and lowering hand etc.
  • You will get a PDF with prompts to use before the class

Strategy Card Game: Middle Earth - Camden Elliott-Williams

Saturday – 3:30 – 5:00 pm (EDT)
Have you wondered what lies beyond Go Fish or Hearts pastures? Ever thought you would have come up with a different plan at the Council of Elrond? Join top-ranked COVID player Camden for an introduction to this strategy-heavy collectable card game!

We will work up to playing in a free browser app in the second half of class, at which point the fate of Middle Earth will be in your hands.

Class requirements

  • Participants need to be on their own devices/screens for the second half of the class
  • You’ll enjoy this class most if you’re familiar with basic Zoom functions like renaming yourself, using chat, muting/unmuting, turning your video on/off, raising/lowering your hand.
  • You need to be able to view the Zoom app and a web browser at the same time.

Parlour Games - Jacquie Adain

Saturday – 6:30 – 8:00 pm (EDT)
Experience a variety of Zoom friendly, interactive games, possibly including Boggle, scavenger hunt (plus an extension), ‘draw-what-I-describe’, observation in a ‘box’, this is a pencil, charades, 2 truths and a lie, mime rhyme, geography, and more. Expect some physical activity, some drama, some thoughtfulness, lots of silliness and laughter.

Class requirements

  • A few sheets of paper
  • Pencils/pens and a black marker
  • It would be helpful to have some familiarity with Zoom features, such as chat, mute/unmute, and renaming yourself
  • It is best if each participant is on their own device/screen. Sharing with a family member and playing as a team will work for some activities.

Play and Improv - Howard Moody

Saturday 6:30 – 8:00 pm (EDT)
An energy-packed hour and a half of improv theater and energizers – and maybe a few games – that work well on Zoom, led by Howard Moody.

Love quick thinking on your feet to make things up? Unphased by silliness – or being whisked into a Zoom breakout room? You’re sure to have a blast.

Considerations

  • Zoom experience rating: 7/10
  • Class size limited to 25

Good games to play on Zoom (& almost anywhere) - Jack Marquess

Saturday 8:30 – 10:00 pm (EDT)
Come for some ECRS game fun – some old games, some new games, all Zoom-adapted. Inviting in particular the next generation of ECRS to hone their game-leading skills (a plus in so many situations) while we all have fun.

Class requirements

  • Have paper (at least five pieces) and pencil or pen on hand
  • You will enjoy the class most if you have some familiarity with Zoom features (chat, mute/unmute, raise hand)
  • You should be on your own device for breakout rooms, but all games can be played with more than one person on a screen if you share answers

Gardening Reflections - Kim Neubauer

Sunday 11:30 am – 1:00 pm (EDT)
Feeling grounded or uprooted after a year of Covid restrictions? This virtual workshop will use gardening as inspiration for self-reflection, discussion and story-telling. You may get lucky and learn something new.

Class suggestions

  • You don’t need to be a Zoom expert, but you’ll enjoy this class most if you have some familiarity with Zoom functions like using chat, muting/unmuting, answering polls, raising and lowering your hand, etc. If you need a primer, come to one of the tutorials (times and dates TBD) or come to class 15 minutes early for tech help.
  • It is strongly recommended that participants be on their own devices, since you’ll be working in breakout rooms.

Creative Arts Studio Practice - Renee Kalandar

Sunday 11:30 am – 1:00 pm (EDT)
Come explore empathy with an interactive creative process. We’ll delve into our relationship to renewal ( the season of the summer solstice, moving from winter to summer, the opening up of the world from the pandemic). Through gentle movement and meditation we will bring awareness to our sensations, feelings, and needs in the present moment. We’ll engage and reflect on poem, story or writing, then set an intention for creative exploration of the topic.

Appreciate this dedicated time to individually explore your creative process! Use whatever materials you are called to use while silently witnessing others process. We will then join in community to share our creative piece.

Preparation and materials
For those who sign up, expect a follow-up email with possible items you may want to have on hand. No specific art supplies are needed.

Foregrounds and Backgrounds - Holly Patchen

Sunday 1:30 – 3:00 pm (EDT)
We’ll first create a textured-looking background using sponges colored with markers. Then explore printing the foreground by carving a rubber eraser and stamping with it onto the background.
