A weekend getaway to refresh and renewwith an intensive play leadership training option
Black Rock Retreat Center – Lancaster, PA – March 22-24, 2019
Step into spring and join us March 22-24 for a weekend of creative and fun community building
Including an intensive play leadership training option offered by recreation leader expert Howard Moody.
Howard Moody, an advanced trainer in social emotional learning approaches, will offer 10 hours of play leadership training for professionals who use recreation in their work. Ideal for teachers, youth group counselors, recreation therapists, facilitators, and anyone interested in building relational trust with groups.
We’ll have a weekend chock full of a variety of activities, including dancing, singing, informal dramatics, crafts, and games. All attendees will be able to take part in games offered as part of the formal Play Leadership training track.
Play leadership training: an educational consultant and advanced trainer for the Nurtured Heart Approach, Howard will facilitate ten hours of training for those looking to expand their skills in recreation leadership. Play Leadership Training
Experience the “Focus on Play” weekend with fun activities designed to engage your senses, develop leadership and build community.
Informal Dramatics with Debra Robert
Discover the creativity within! Activities geared to having fun. Come pretend and act a little. No experience necessary. No one will be put on the spot.
Singing Out Loud with Allie Hajian
Come add your voice to the chorus, singing easy rounds and fun sing along songs together. Feel free to bring your favorite to share, whether way wacky or melodiously moving.
Folk Dancing with Arie Zacharias
We’ll learn dances to a variety of music from around the world – with and without partners. Beginners and those with more experience – come join us, hold hands, and enjoy!
Paper & Pencil and "Late Night Games" with Arnie Zacharias
Explore individual and group games using paper and pencil. Some for in-car travel, others for parties and late night groups. Tried and true over many years at ECRS. Not responsible for excessive laughter.
Games with Howard Moody
Kids and kids at heart (adults!) all need a little play in their lives. Join Howard and those attending his Play Leadership Intensive to experience their expanded games “bag of tricks”!
Bubble printing with Allie Hajian
Recapture the rapturous feeling of blowing bubbles… Big bubbles. Small bubbles. Pink bubbles. Blue bubbles. We’ll blow them in all colors to adorn cards and paper. Expect lots of inspiration – maybe even some insight into the physics of bubbles from our resident rocket scientist.
Line Dancing with Debra Robert and Arnie Zacharias
Have fun dancing to lively music – oldies, country, modern and soul. Experience not at all necessary!
Exploring the Outdoors in Early Spring with Kirk Wattles
Early Spring is our chance to watch the world unfold, as it does every year. We will look most closely at trees. This is a rain or shine class. Please plan to dress for the weather!
Schedule
- Registration begins at 4:30 pm on Friday
- Dinner served 6 – 6:30 pm
- The program for the weekend begins at 7:45 pm Friday evening and concludes with an optional lunch on Sunday afternoon.
Meals
Five delicious buffet meals are served (Friday dinner; Saturday breakfast, lunch, & dinner; Sunday breakfast & optional lunch). Evening snacks are provided.

Save $$$ two ways
- Register EARLY. Registrations after February 22nd will include an additional $15 per adult late fee.
- Become a MEMBER of ECRS. Members get a $15 deduction from the cost of the weekend. Want to join? Pay dues before the weekend and you can deduct $15.

Nestled in the heart of 100 acres of woods, Black Rock Retreat has many recreational opportunities, including numerous hiking trails.ECRS has reserved two lodging options: (1) motel-style rooms with one queen-size and two twin beds each, and a private bath (pillow, sheets, blankets, and towels provided), or (2) dormitory-style cabins with bunk beds. Only mattresses are provided (bring your own pillow, sleeping bag or sheets & blankets, towels, and soap). See pricing above for each option.
What to Bring

- A flashlight to help navigate dark paths between buildings at night
- A mug for hot drinks between meals will save on disposable cups
- Your musical instruments for jamming!
Important: If you are staying in a dormitory cabin, be sure to bring a pillow, sleeping bag or sheets, blankets, towels, and soap.
Please Note
- ECRS events are fragrance, drug, and alcohol free
- All attending are asked to volunteer for one hour to help the weekend run smoothly
- Smoking is limited to the outdoors
Cancellation Policy
A $20 cancellation fee will be charged for all cancellations received after March 8th, to handle processing and handling fees.
